Please join us for a two hour presentation on the modern practice of Amazonian Shamanism. The presentation will introduce Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine, including the use of master plants and ayahuasca ceremony. Dr. Tafur will review the practice of traditional medicine at his healing center in the Peruvian Amazon, focusing primarily on the center’s experiences with patients and visitors over the past years. He will also demonstrate parallels between this work and modern advances in medical science in the fields of psychoneuroimmunology and epigenetics. Later in the presentation, we will move to a question and answer format, encouraging exploration into this powerful medical tradition and the possibilities for integration.
Dr. Joe Tafur MD is a family physician and founding partner of Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual, a traditional healing center in the Upper Amazonian Rainforest in Iquitos, Peru where he works with master Shipibo healer and shaman Ricardo Amaringo and Cvita Mamic, Canadian artist and gifted healer (www.nihuerao.com). Dr. Tafur studied medicine at UCSD SOM and has been an active member of the Integrative Medicine community. Over the years, Dr. Tafur has collaborated on a variety of community and academic projects with his colleagues at UCSD, UCLA, Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, the Alternative Healing Network, and the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine; including two years of post-doctoral research at the UCSD Dept. of Psychiatry/Behavioral Medicine. For the past seven years, Dr. Tafur has been travelling to Peru to study with Master Shipibo Healers. He is now advancing his study under Maestro Ricardo Amaringo and works alongside him in healing ceremony at Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual.
